How Pitt is helping the commonwealth thrive in an increasingly digital world
Pennsylvania faces one of the United States’ lowest levels of digital literacy and connectivity, according to its Department of Labor and Industry. To address this issue, the Greater Pittsburgh Digital Inclusion Alliance (GPDIA) convened a network of Western Pennsylvania organizations and launched a targeted effort to bridge the region’s digital divide.

BioForge moves into next phase of construction (The Pitt News)
Friday marked a milestone in construction for Pitt’s BioForge. All those who contributed to the BioForge project — including leaders at Pitt, the construction team, architects and representatives from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and ElevateBio — gathered at the construction site for a “topping off” ceremony on Sept. 6 and signed the final beam.

On Sept. 5, a group of about two dozen folks from Pitt and the surrounding Hazelwood neighborhood got a sneak preview of the 185,000-gross-square-foot BioForge life-sciences manufacturing center now being constructed on 3.5 acres of the former steel-making property.

Those values — along with the University’s role as a major employer, landowner and partner in Western Pennsylvania’s economic and social progress — led to Pitt’s designation as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

Oakland will be home to a new affordable housing community for LGBTQ+ older adults
Neighborhood residents and community organizations gathered at Pitt to celebrate the groundbreaking for Mosaic Apartments on May 23 at the future location of the building, followed by a celebratory reception at the University Club on the University of Pittsburgh campus.
