Community Impact

Pitt’s approach to community engagement embraces the notion that partnerships are the vehicle for achieving sustainable impact. And we accomplish this by using Pitt’s tools of learning, research, service, programming and innovation to partner with community collaborators to address systemic challenges that help our partners move forward strategies that lead to thriving communities.

  • Our researchers are studying the impact of safe water access in under-resourced communities and providing solutions.
  • Our neighbors and community leaders are coming together to enact collective change for affordable housing.
  • Our students, staff and faculty are collaborating with community partners to provide easier access to fresh food and healthier living.
  • Our communities’ youth and families are being equipped with the knowledge, resources and support to be confident in their identities and successful in life.

In our communities. With our communities.

Partners in Possible: 2024 Community Impact Report

We know that it’s possible at Pitt to help create and sustain strategies and solutions that allow our communities to thrive. Our partners work to address challenges and conditions in our environment that have a major impact on people’s health, well-being and quality of life, also known as the social determinants of health—where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship and age.

The 34 programs showcased in our 2024 Community Impact Report explore how, together, we are partnering to help our communities, and our region, succeed.

A Front Door to Pitt: Five Years of Engagement & Impact with Pitt's CECs

Acting as a front door to Pitt, the Community Engagement Centers (CECs) offer a vibrant and welcoming space to foster collaboration and house services, programs, and staff dedicated to the neighborhood. Since 2017, the CECs have offered more than 175 programs to help small businesses to grow, hire neighbors to work at Pitt, tutor and mentor young people, promote community arts, improve health and wellness, strengthen our civic involvement, and so much more.

This five-year retrospective celebrates this work, recognizing the community organizations and residents, and Pitt faculty, staff, and students who bring our CECs to life and ensure that our Neighborhood Commitments are collaborative, long term, and helping to improve people’s lives.
